Michigan Kids Deserve the Option to Safely Return to the Classroom!

Every child deserves an education that works for them. Every child should have access to all options that would work for them. But, this won’t happen unless Governor Gretchen Whitmer hears from parents like us.

Send your letter today to tell Governor Whitmer, “Give every student in Michigan the option for safe, in-person learning this school year!”

Dear Governor Whitmer,

Parents like us want to reopen schools safely and sensibly.  We know the science, the data, the doctors and the epidemiologists tell us it’s possible.  They say success happens when policymakers and school leaders embrace effective, accountable, student-centered approaches.

Success happens when schools offer parents and students opportunities for safe, in-person learning.

The science and the data are clear.

Pediatricians are clear that the benefits of kids being in the classroom far outweighs the risks.  The CDC warns that the harms from school closures are significant in the near and long term.

The science and the data are equally clear about the damage being done to children like mine by extended school closures.

Michigan students’ social and emotional health is being tragically affected by prolonged school closures.

It’s time to make Michigan’s students the priority. Please take all necessary steps today to ensure Michigan schools safely re-open immediately for in-person learning.

Sincerely,

School building closures are having a devastating, underreported impact on Michigan’s kids. Tragically, school doors remain locked to too many students across the state. With schools closed, according to medical experts at the CDC, students are experiencing and or at risk of:

  • Academic gaps
  • Isolation
  • Social challenges
  • Emotional trauma
  • Depression
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Lower levels of self-esteem and more

Pediatricians at the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics report that “school closures have put the mental and social health of children at risk, in addition to affecting their educational trajectories.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “the harms attributed to closed schools on the social, emotional, and behavioral health, economic well-being, and academic achievement of children, in both the short- and long-term, are… significant.”

That’s why both the CDC and the MIAAP have strongly recommended that school buildings re-open safely– for kids’ social, emotional, and academic health.

We’ve heard from the experts.  Now, Governor Whitmer needs to hear from parents like us.  It’s as easy as filling out the form on this page and hitting “submit.”

Our kids deserve better!  Tell Governor Whitmer:
My child deserves a smarter plan of action for school this fall, that includes safe options that work for our family!
