Nolan Out Loud: Dems recklessly fuel virus phobia

Nolan Finley
The Detroit News
Vice President Mike Pence listens as Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., makes a point during the vice presidential debate Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020, at Kingsbury Hall on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Maybe it's superstition, maybe it's fear, or maybe Democratic trash-talking of a soon-to-be-delivered Covid-19 vaccine is taking a toll, but a shocking number of Michigan residents say they won't get the inoculation if it comes available as expected later this year.

A Detroit News/WDIV poll finds one-third of state residents say they won't get vaccinated.

That's just nuts. More people than that say they wear masks to protect themselves from the virus -- 92% according to a recent poll -- so why wouldn't they take advantage of the ultimate Covid-18 shield.

Vaccines have been around for a very long time and have become routine -- I got both a flu shot and shingles vaccine this week. The only way to defeat this disease is either herd immunity or mass vaccinations. The latter seems the most sensible route.

Democrats, including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, worried that a vaccine approved before the election will boost Donald Trump's chances of reelection -- have been raising unwarranted and unsubstantiated claims that the president is rushing through a substandard vaccine.

That won't happen, according to those working on inoculations. It is reckless for the Democrats to go all Suzanne Sommers on a vaccine that should put an end to the death and devastation of Covid-19,

Governor prefers dictating

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer prefers dictating to governing. Even though the state Supreme Court ruled the emergency orders she's issued since April 30 are invalid because her declarations lacked legislative approval, she's still trying to find loopholes to bypass the Legislature and maintain her authoritarian regime. See my column today.

Pence v. Harris

I also did a piece on the vice-presidential debate. In a nutshell, I welcomed the civility and substance of the exchange, particularly after last week's worst-ever debate. Vice President Mike Pence had the tougher job, since he had to defend an actual record while Sen. Kamal Harris was free to attack. And once again, the hardest questions were reserved for the Republican. Read my thoughts here.

More support for permanently eliminating the handshake: Scientists now say Covid-19 can live on skin for up to 9 hours

This should be an interesting experiment: The Miami Dolphins have received permission from the Florida governor to fill their stadium to full capacity.

More promises from Biden -- now he says he'll pay off your student debt. How? You guessed it -- by taxing the rich. Democrats are going to raises taxes so high on the wealthy they'll soon have so little money lefty they'll be able to qualify for all the free stuff he's promising.
